What are your responsibilities in your role as an Account Executive at Emmis Marketing?
My responsibilities include working with prospective and current clients to help develop marketing strategies for their businesses that build awareness and deliver ROI. Daily activities include researching and contacting prospective clients by email, phone, video and social media. I partner with clients to conduct a customer need analysis meeting and then collaborate with the internal team to develop a custom marketing strategy that best fits their needs. I present the proposal to the client and handle any objections or concerns. Once the proposal is agreed upon, I work with the internal team to implement the strategy. I then provide constant updates on the performance of the campaign with the client while maintaining a great relationship.
What were you up to before you joined Emmis?
Right before Emmis I worked at Gannett (Indy Star) but was only there for 11 months. Before that I was the Indiana Sales Manager for Vanguard Wines for almost 5 years. I managed a team that sold small production, fine wines from family owned wineries across California, Oregon, Spain, Italy, Germany, France and Argentina. We sold wine into local liquor stores, wine shops and restaurants from South Bend to Evansville. During this time I met all kinds of winemakers and toured vineyards and wineries in California, Oregon, Spain and Italy. In that time I also passed the exam to become a Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW).
What is your favorite part about working at Emmis?
In the short time I have been at Emmis I have enjoyed the people and the positivity the most. I haven’t been around a true team environment in a while and it feels good to be part of something special.
What is your favorite thing about working in marketing?
Meeting and working with different types of people and helping them achieve their goals. When you develop relationships with your clients you really get to know them on a personal level and feel a responsibility to help their business be successful. I also enjoy keeping up on the latest marketing trends and trying to find new ways to reach consumers.
What characteristics do you need to be successful in the industry?
You have to have the ability to connect and communicate with clients. There are thousands of other companies that do the exact same thing we do but if you can’t build relationships through communication and trust then you will not be successful.
What are your hobbies outside of work?
I love playing all kinds of sports: basketball, golf, volleyball, baseball, swimming and soccer. I coach my kid’s basketball and soccer teams as well. As a family we love hiking, kayaking and camping during the summer and fall.
Did you have any unusual jobs before working at Emmis?
During summer break in college I worked for my father-in-law’s excavating business. I got to operate heavy equipment like bulldozers and backhoes but the most unusual part about the job was picking through trash. When they tore down an old building or house they transported all the remains to an area and dumped it in a big pile. My job was to pick through the rubble and pull out anything valuable like aluminum, copper, wooden pallets or anything that could be reused. Sometimes there was garbage mixed in and on the really hot days you could smell it from far away. I separated it into piles and then someone came and picked it up. Good thing I only had to do it for one summer!
